OCD in the UAE: why it is so misunderstood and what actually works

Marilyn Bryce·LAR Certified Coach·8 min read

OCD is one of the most misrepresented conditions in popular culture — and a distinct clinical condition that deserves proper assessment.

OCD is not about being tidy. It is not a quirky personality trait. It is a recognised clinical condition involving intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours that cannot simply be controlled through willpower, and it should be assessed by a qualified clinician.

Recognised treatments for OCD include specific forms of CBT, such as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and medication, as recommended by a clinician. These remain the right starting point for many people.

Some people also choose coaching to better understand the anxiety that accompanies OCD. LAR coaching draws on TRT, developed by the Institute of Applied Psychophysiology. It is educational support, not OCD treatment, and works best alongside clinical care.

Pure-O is a commonly used term for OCD where compulsions are mainly mental. It can be hard to recognise because the rituals are not visible, so it is worth describing mental reviewing and reassurance-seeking clearly when you speak to a clinician.

If you have OCD in any form, and you are living in the UAE, you are welcome to ask our coaches whether coaching could complement the care you already have. Outcomes vary.
