Self-Harm & Anxiety: coaching enquiries from across the UAE
If you are hurting yourself, you deserve compassionate, qualified clinical support. Coaching is not a treatment for self-harm and is not a crisis service. Please read the safety information below first.
Please seek clinical help first
Self-harm needs assessment and support from a doctor or licensed mental health professional. Coaches are not clinicians and cannot assess or manage risk.
If you are in immediate danger or at risk of harming yourself, contact your local emergency services or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. Coaching is not a crisis or emergency service.
Understanding the concern
Some people describe self-harm as a way of coping with overwhelming distress or anxiety. That experience is real and deserves care, not judgment.
Any coaching contact would only be considered alongside appropriate clinical care, and would focus on general anxiety education rather than the self-harm itself.
What an enquiry might involve
- 01If you are safe right now and have clinical support in place, you can enquire about whether coaching could complement it.
- 02Your coach will ask whether you are under the care of a doctor, psychiatrist or psychologist.
- 03If there is current risk, your coach will signpost you to clinical and emergency services rather than begin coaching.
Practical session expectations
- 01Coaching is offered only where a treating clinician is involved and risk is being managed clinically.
- 02Sessions are non-judgmental and present-focused.
- 03Your coach will pause coaching and signpost help if risk appears to increase.
Worth discussing with your doctor or practitioner
- 01Any self-harm, urges or thoughts of suicide. Please share these with a doctor or mental health professional.
- 02Wound care and physical health.
- 03A safety plan developed with your clinician.
Suitability and boundaries
Coaching is not suitable as a primary or standalone response to self-harm. It may only be considered as a complement to clinical care.
Coaching is educational support. It does not diagnose, prescribe or replace care from a doctor, psychiatrist or licensed psychologist, and no particular outcome or timeline is guaranteed. Condition names on this site describe what people tell us they are experiencing, not services that diagnose or treat those conditions.
About the approach
LAR coaches draw on Threat Recalibration Therapy (TRT) and the related HSF framework, which were developed by and belong to the Institute of Applied Psychophysiology. Descriptions of TRT and any programme figures are the Institute's own. You can read the Institute's material directly:
